Kindergarten teachers and homeschooling parents know the frustration of trying to find books that a young beginning reader can master by using phonics skills. Many books are marketed as beginning reading books. However, most of these over-rely on memorization of sight words or are so boring they'll insult your child's intelligence.
This set of 12 books builds on phonics skills a child has practiced using the free worksheets in this program. Each book starts with a word list. The child should be able to sound out the words without help. When the child can read the words on the word list out loud in less than 1 minute, he or she is ready to read the book independently. Listen to the child read and don't tell him/her what the words are. Let the child succeed! Express delight in his/her ability to read!
At the end of each book are 6 comprehension questions. These are also written for the child to decode and read independently. Listen to the child read and answer each question. If he/she doesn't know the answer, encourage "research" by having the child read the book again to find the answer. Repetition plays an important role in developing reading ability.
